The St. George Museum of Art is recruiting new volunteers and docents to support educational efforts and community outreach, according to a Aug. 31 announcement by the City of St. George. The recruitment drive arrives as the museum continues a season of diverse programming, following the recent appointment of Meagan Evans as the institution's new Manager and Curator.
Volunteer Opportunities and Requirements
The museum is seeking individuals to assist with various events and to lead 5th grade tours during the fall and winter months. These tours provide an opportunity for students from Washington County to visit the museum and engage with the collections. Docents typically volunteer for two to three hours per shift, approximately three to four times per month during the school tour season, which runs from September through November and January through March.
Training and Application Process
The City of St. George noted that an art background or degree is not required to participate. All docents receive training regarding the museum's art, specific exhibitions, and methods for leading engaging tours. Interested individuals must submit an application via the museum's website and, if invited, must report to Human Resources at 220 N. 200 E. with a driver's license or state ID to complete a background check and an oral fluid drug test.
New Leadership at the Museum
The recruitment initiative follows the appointment of Meagan Evans as Manager and Curator, a role she assumed on July 31, 2025. Evans, originally from Heber City, Utah, holds a BA in Art History and Curatorial Studies and an MA in Comparative Studies from Brigham Young University. She is currently working toward a PhD in Art of the American West from the University of Oklahoma, expected in 2026. Evans' previous experience includes fellowships at the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West in Norman, Oklahoma, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas.
Vision for the Future
Evans stated that her goal is to honor the region's artistic heritage, including Native American contributions, while positioning the museum as a leading hub for art of the American West. Michelle Graves, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services, noted that Evans' vast experience will play a crucial role in elevating the museum. Kacey Carter, Special Events and Programming Specialist for the Art Museum, added that Evans' arrival has brought fresh energy and the start of a new chapter for the institution.
Current and Recent Exhibitions
The museum's current programming includes notable solo exhibitions. Samantha Killinen's debut solo exhibition, which explores themes of compassion and control through the lens of the prison system, is currently hosted at the museum. Additionally, the museum is hosting Megan Knobloch Geilman's first solo exhibition, a mid-career retrospective that weaves together Egyptian funerary rites, Dutch Golden Age painting, and Japanese kintsugi. Geilman's work explores narratives related to the history and social questions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Museum History and Operations
The St. George Art Museum is located at 47 East 200 North in historic downtown St. George, housed in a former sugar beet seed storage facility that was transformed into a gallery in 1997. The museum maintains a permanent collection of 1,400 pieces and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is donation-based, with funds directly supporting the museum's education and operating expenses.

The museum is supported by a dedicated staff including Assistant Curator and Preparator Stephanie Wheeler, Head of Education Ashlyn Langford, and Marketing Associate Jennah Johnson. Other staff members include Museum Services Associates Michelle Cole, Susan Chollet, Kelyn Rowett, Kyler Andreason, and Emeline Cheney.
