A funeral service for Provo Fire and Rescue Captain Spencer Devan Long is scheduled for Wednesday at the UCCU Center in Orem, following his death on July 17, 2026, while adventuring outdoors with family members.
Details of the Loss
According to an obituary from Walker Funeral Home, Long, 44, of Mona, Utah, died while participating in outdoor activities with his wife, Katrina, his stepson, Reid Andrew Vernon, and his two sons, Thayne Spencer Long and Gage Norman Long. The family was sealed in the Payson Utah Temple on September 12, 2020.
A Distinguished Career
Long was a highly decorated member of the fire and rescue community. In addition to his role as a Captain with Provo Fire and Rescue, he served as a wildland firefighter, working as both a hotshot and a smokejumper. His specialized experience included roles with the Mountain Rescue Team, the Wildland Team, the Rapid Extraction Module Support Team, the Utah County Special Response Team, and as a flight medic with Classic Air Medical. He also served as a rescue and hazardous materials specialist for Utah Task Force 1.
Life and Education
Born September 7, 1981, in Vernal, Utah, Long was the firstborn son of Devan and Wendi Long. He was raised on a cattle ranch and graduated from Uintah High School in 2001. After completing a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina, he earned a bachelor's degree in health and emergency management from Utah Valley University.
