Shaun D. Ketchum Jr., a student at Utah State University's Blanding campus, is working toward a career in construction management by leveraging hands-on training and advanced certifications. After experiencing the financial challenges of working multiple jobs, Ketchum sought out educational pathways to transition from manual labor to industry management.
Ketchum began his journey by contacting Pam Hosler, a financial aid counselor at USU Blanding, which led him to enroll in a heavy equipment program. He has since expanded his skill set through various programs including construction technology and management, CDL training, and heavy equipment operation.
His academic record includes making the Dean's List twice and earning an associate of applied science degree in General Technology. During the 2023 commencement ceremony, he also received a multicultural certificate and medallion. Ketchum has acquired several professional certifications, such as CPR, building construction safety, and mine safety and health.
Ketchum is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in technology systems with an emphasis in technical management. He expressed interest in pursuing a master's degree in the future and aims to work within project management or construction management.
As a Native American and first-generation college student, Ketchum is motivated by a desire to overcome traditional limitations and create opportunities for his community. He credits his family's support as essential to his ability to pursue these educational goals rather than remaining in low-wage labor.
