The Grasshopper Fire has grown to 21,126 acres and remains at 0% containment as of July 30, 2026. Firefighters are working to strengthen existing firelines along the edge of the fire to protect the Pine Hollow and Sportsman Park communities.
On Wednesday, crews successfully completed a firing operation to secure the fire's edge along Forest Road 27. Personnel are working to improve containment and continue using existing roads to build direct and indirect fire lines. Aerial resources are also being utilized to help slow the spread of the fire.
The fire was first reported on July 23, 2026, following multiple lightning storms over the forest in the preceding two weeks. It originated north of Forest Road 4812 and west of Rocky Butte, spreading east and north driven by winds and hot, dry conditions. The fire is currently established in the Badger, Little Badger, and Tygh Creek drainages.
Current fire behavior is influenced by seasonal fuel levels, including timber, hardwood litter, and tall grass. While the general vicinity is one of the few areas in Oregon not currently in drought conditions, the fire sits on the edge of a Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory area.
Firefighters have reduced the southern flank to only scattered heat through work along the 4810 Road and Highland Ditch. However, the northeastern and eastern portions of the fire face challenges from afternoon downslope winds. A cold front approaching Friday may bring hotter, drier conditions that could intensify fire behavior.
The incident, located 3 miles north of Sportsman Park, is being managed by the Mt. Hood National Forest. A closure order is currently in effect for the Mt. Hood National Forest. The estimated containment date for the fire is October 1, 2026.
