As students return to school, Eagle Mountain City reminds drivers, pedestrians, students, and families to take extra care around schools and neighborhoods. More students will be walking, biking, riding buses, and traveling to and from school, which means everyone has a role in keeping roads and school zones safe.
Slow Down in School Zones
Drivers should slow down and stay alert when traveling through school zones. Watch for posted speed limits, crossing guards, pedestrians, bicycles, and students entering or leaving school grounds.
Give yourself extra time during the morning and afternoon commute and expect traffic to be heavier near schools.
Stay Alert Behind the Wheel
Avoid distractions while driving, especially in areas where children may be crossing the road.
Put your phone away while driving.
Watch carefully for students near crosswalks and intersections.
Follow directions from crossing guards and school staff.
Stop for pedestrians in designated crosswalks.
Do not pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians.
Be prepared for children to enter the roadway unexpectedly.
Watch for Students Walking and Biking
Students walking or biking to school should use sidewalks and designated crossings. Parents and caregivers can help children review safe routes to school and remind them to look both ways before crossing the street.
Drivers should be especially cautious near sidewalks, bike lanes, trails, and neighborhood streets leading to schools.
Be Careful Around School Drop-Off and Pick-Up Areas
Follow school-specific drop-off and pick-up procedures and avoid stopping in travel lanes, crosswalks, or other areas where vehicles or pedestrians could be blocked.
Parents and caregivers should allow additional time for drop-off and pick-up and follow directions from school staff and crossing guards.
