In a report published August 7, M. Whitfield, Director of the Digestive Health Division at the Cleveland Medical Research Institute, stated that many Americans over the age of 45 are experiencing serious health issues stemming from the gut. Whitfield, who has treated over 14,000 patients, claims that many medical professionals focus on treating symptoms rather than the underlying cause of digestive disorders.
Whitfield reported that a specific condition involving methanogenic biofilm can coat the inside of the intestines. This biofilm is described as a sticky polysaccharide matrix produced by archaea that produces methane gas. This coating can lead to mechanical obstructions by preventing normal intestinal contractions, known as peristalsis.
According to Whitfield, this condition is often misdiagnosed as normal aging. She noted that the presence of this biofilm can be linked to various issues, including brain fog, fatigue, skin breakouts, and unexplained weight gain. Whitfield suggested that current laxative markets, valued at over $1.4 billion annually, focus on temporary relief rather than dissolving the biofilm matrix.
Whitfield shared clinical observations regarding the severity of untreated gut dysfunction. One case involved a 61-year-old woman who required surgery to remove 18 inches of her colon due to severe fecal impaction. Another case involved a 54-year-old man who suffered from septic shock caused by a perforated colon.
Whitfield identified eleven warning signs that may indicate intestinal walls are being coated, including irregular bowel movements, bloating that worsens throughout the day, and sudden food sensitivities. She stated that if a person experiences three or more of these symptoms, they should investigate the root cause.
