Trina Kohler, a building substitute teacher at Daniels Canyon Elementary in Wasatch, Utah, was recognized as the runner-up in the Kelly Education Substitute Educator of the Year program. The program honors educators who demonstrate dedication and support students and school communities.
Kohler's career in education began with 22 years in special education support. While pursuing a degree to become a regular education teacher, she transitioned into substitute teaching and decided to focus on that path because of the ability to work across different grade levels and connect with various students.
As a building substitute, Kohler works at her school every day, supporting teachers and assisting students even when no specific absences are present. She noted that while the lack of a structured schedule was an initial adjustment, she grew to enjoy the variety of working in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, as well as art and PE.
Kohler shared that building relationships with students is the most rewarding part of her role. She described the importance of seeing students grow over time and finding meaning in moments when former students recognize her.
Nicola Soares, President of Kelly Education, stated that Kohler represents high-quality educators and operates with high integrity to ensure student success.
As part of the recognition, Kohler received a $1,000 bonus from Kelly Education. Additionally, $500 was donated on her behalf to Daniels Canyon Elementary in Wasatch, Utah.
