A Rowland Hall student has solidified her career aspirations in nursing following a summer internship at the University of Utah, according to a September 17 report. Elayna Hoglund, a high school senior, used the program to explore her interest in pediatric pulmonology and caregiving.
During her four-week internship, Hoglund interviewed and shadowed more than 15 medical professionals, including nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse managers, and doctors of nursing practice. Her experience included observing in a clinical setting, completing emergency response simulations, and working a 12-hour shift. She also spent time at a Spanish-speaking clinic.
Hoglund's interest in pulmonology began after a campus speaker discussed pediatric asthma, which led her to research cystic fibrosis and enroll in a Human Anatomy and Physiology class. Through a partnership between Rowland Hall and the University of Utah’s College of Nursing, Hoglund was able to connect with various University of Utah Health employees to build her experience.
The Rowland Hall internship program, which has operated for over a decade, recently enabled 13 students to participate in 11 different internships during the summer of 2026. These placements included roles in fields such as conservation biology, law, and neurobiology at various Utah organizations.
