Shortly after midnight on Monday, as Karl Deisseroth, a professor of bioengineering and psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, was drifting off to sleep, he received a phone call. When he answered, the 54-year-old neuroscientist received the news of a lifetime: He had won a Nobel Prize.
