A closure order is in effect for the Dark Canyon Wilderness and portions of Bears Ears National Monument within the Monticello Ranger District following the rapid growth of the Babylon Fire. The Manti-La Sal National Forest implemented Closure Order #04-10-26-05-01 to protect public health and safety during active wildfire operations.
Duration and scope of closure
The order, which became effective at 12:00 p.m. on June 28, 2026, is scheduled to remain in place through August 31, 2026, unless it is rescinded. The closure impacts all National Forest System lands, roads, and trails within the specified boundaries in San Juan County.
Rapid growth of Babylon Fire
The Babylon Fire, located one mile northeast of Babylon Pasture, has experienced significant wind-driven growth to the northeast. In the last 24 hours, the fire expanded from 300 acres to 16,171 acres and currently has 0% containment.
Suppression efforts and resources deployed
To assist with suppression efforts, Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 2 has been ordered to support operations. Current resources are utilizing a full suppression strategy intended to protect infrastructure, structures, and other values while ensuring the safety of the public and firefighters.
Aerial and ground firefighting tactics
Aerial support has focused on applying retardant to predicted progression areas when conditions permit. Ground crews are continuing to scout the area and develop suppression tactics.
Forecasted dangerous fire weather conditions
High fire activity is expected to continue due to forecasted windy conditions, temperatures in the upper 80s, and very low humidity.
Public safety and information updates
While no evacuations are currently in place, officials encourage the public to stay informed through local authorities regarding potential evacuation orders. The public is prohibited from entering the affected area or using closed Forest roads and trails.
