BYU forward Tyler Betsey is working to establish his role within the Cougars' rotation following a quiet offensive start in preseason exhibition games, according to a November 1 report.
Betsey, a transfer from Syracuse, has appeared in the starting lineup for the first two exhibition games but has recorded only one field goal on six attempts in just over 40 minutes of playing time.
Head coach Kevin Young stated he is not concerned regarding Betsey's shooting ability, noting that the player has not yet been provided with many offensive opportunities. Young said Betsey has been tremendous defensively and that the team has focused heavily on his rebounding and defensive play.
Standing 6-foot-9 and weighing 225 pounds, Betsey is viewed by Young as a solid interior defender to support big men Jaxon Kohler, Khadim Mboup, and Jake Wahlin. Before joining BYU, Betsey shot nearly 40% from the 3-point line at Syracuse.
In the two exhibition games played thus far, Betsey has recorded seven rebounds and two assists. He recorded a +/- of +7 against Nebraska and +14 against UNLV. Young noted that the team has not yet shown its full offensive package and expects more dynamic ball movement once real games begin.
