University of Utah head football coach Morgan Scalley held a weekly press conference on Monday at the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center to preview the upcoming game against Houston. During the session, Scalley discussed the team's performance in their recent game against Colorado and the impact of various players on the program.
Scalley highlighted the upcoming matchup against Houston, noting the team is a veteran group with a 6-1 record. He described Houston as a top 25 opponent that ranks 10th in total offense, 12th in scoring offense, and 6th in pass efficiency. Additionally, Houston ranks 6th in the country in rush defense and 6th in third and sixth down conversions, according to Scalley.
Reflecting on the previous game against Colorado, Scalley noted that the defense played a physical game, though the offense missed opportunities to extend their lead. He mentioned that the team could have potentially held a 17-0 lead in the first half but instead entered halftime with a six-point advantage after three red zone opportunities resulted in field goals instead of touchdowns. He specifically praised the performances of Creed Whittemore, James Chenault, and Hunter Andrews, noting Andrews' consistency in both running and blocking.
Regarding the defensive unit, Scalley stated the team remains in the top 10 nationally in pass efficiency defense. He explained that the pass rush has been effective, with the majority of passes faced in the last three games being released in under 2.7 seconds. Scalley noted that the pressure is forcing quarterbacks to throw earlier than desired and resulting in several pass breakups and interceptions.
Scalley also addressed the importance of leadership, specifically praising Wayshawn Parker for his energy and work ethic in practice. He noted that Parker is willing to have uncomfortable conversations to ensure teammates are meeting the necessary standards. Additionally, Scalley mentioned upcoming athletic milestones, including a celebration for longtime volleyball coach Beth Launiere this Sunday and tennis player Sara Akid clinching a spot in the NCAA singles tournament in Georgia this November.
The upcoming game at Rice-Eccles Stadium will mark the 100th consecutive sellout for the venue. Scalley expressed excitement for the challenge presented by Houston's offense and defense.
