No. 12 Utah is employing an innovative two-quarterback system to maintain a 10-game winning streak, according to a CBS Sports report published October 7. The scheme utilizes Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin in various roles to create a highly deceptive offense that has challenged opposing defenses.
The offensive system, developed by first-year offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven, involves deploying both quarterbacks simultaneously in roles typically held by running backs or receivers. This approach was designed to solve a roster retention dilemma after former coach Kyle Whittingham departed for Michigan. The strategy allows Utah to keep both Dampier, a senior transfer from New Mexico, and Ficklin, a left-handed player from Muskogee, Oklahoma, on campus. Dampier, who earned Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors after throwing for 2,490 yards and 835 rushing yards in 2025, has advocated for Ficklin's inclusion in the rotation to maximize the team's potential.
The versatility of the duo is reflected in their snap counts and positioning. Through four games, Ficklin has taken 56 snaps at quarterback and 32 snaps in other positions, including the backfield, wide, and slot. Dampier has lined up in non-quarterback positions 11 times. This creativity includes a variety of looks, such as a triple option and a formation with four men lined up side-by-side in the shotgun. The system has been effective enough that Utah has led by at least 20 points at halftime in every game this season.
The Utes enter their matchup against Kansas with a 4-0 record and a chance to achieve their first 5-0 start since 2015. The team's success has been bolstered by running back Wayshawn Parker, who has recorded five rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns through the first four games. The offensive scheme remains a point of interest for coaches across the country, with some describing the package as a nightmare for defensive coordinators.
Utah's next scheduled game is a Big 12 home opener against Kansas on Saturday.
