A new study from University of Utah Health has identified a dangerous synergy between heat stress and air pollution that significantly increases suicide risk during the summer months. Researchers found that while high temperatures are linked to higher suicide rates year-round, the presence of nitrogen dioxide can amplify this risk by nearly 50% on unusually hot days.
Synergistic Effects of Pollution
The study, published in Environment International, analyzed more than 7,500 suicide cases across Utah recorded between 2000 and 2016. By cross-referencing the approximate levels of heat stress, nitrogen dioxide, and fine particulate air pollution at the decedent's address, researchers were able to measure specific environmental impacts on mortality.
To achieve a more accurate measurement of how temperature affects the human body, the research team utilized the wet bulb globe temperature. Unlike standard temperature readings, this metric accounts for wind speed, humidity, and cloud cover. The data revealed that for every 9°F increase in wet bulb globe temperature, the risk of suicide increased by 5%, with the most significant risks occurring during the warmer period from late March to late September.
Seasonal Risk Variations
While heat stress alone is associated with increased suicide risk throughout the year, nitrogen dioxide—a pollutant produced by gas-powered vehicles and fossil fuel power plants—creates a much more complex danger during the summer.
Dirga Lamichhane, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher at University of Utah Health and the study's first author, noted a strong synergistic effect between heat and nitrogen dioxide during the warm season. According to Lamichhane, the effect of heat stress becomes especially high when nitrogen dioxide levels are very high. Specifically, during the warm season, if nitrogen dioxide levels are elevated, every 9°F increase in wet bulb globe temperature is associated with an almost 50% increase in suicide risk.
Climate Change Complications
The relationship between air quality and suicide risk changes significantly as the seasons shift. During the cold season in Utah, when overall air pollution levels tend to be higher, nitrogen dioxide is associated with increased suicide risk regardless of the temperature.
Amanda Bakian, PhD, a research associate professor of psychiatry at University of Utah Health and senior author on the study, emphasized that the two-week period leading up to a suicide represents a critical window for intervention. Bakian also noted that the changing climate in Utah may alter these patterns, as the increasing frequency of wildfire seasons could change nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter measurements during the summer months.
Broader Mental Health Risks
The findings from University of Utah Health align with broader warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding the mental health impacts of extreme weather. The CDC has noted that extreme weather events associated with climate change are increasing and can affect mental health in several ways.
According to the CDC, mental health problems often increase following disasters among both individuals with a history of mental illness and those without. The agency cited research showing high levels of anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder following events like Hurricane Katrina, as well as similar observations following floods and heat waves.
Vulnerable Populations
The CDC also highlighted specific physiological risks associated with temperature extremes. Patients with mental illness are noted as being especially susceptible to heat. The agency reported that suicide rates fluctuate with weather, specifically increasing in high temperatures, which serves as an indicator of climate change impacts on depression.
Furthermore, the CDC stated that hot weather poses significant risks for patients with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, because certain medications may interfere with the body's ability to regulate temperature or may induce hyperthermia. Other concerns include the impact of heat waves on individuals with dementia, which is a known risk factor for hospitalization and death.
Future Intervention Goals
While the researchers at University of Utah Health emphasize that these findings represent associations rather than direct causation, they suggest that environmental policies could serve as a tool for suicide prevention. Future research may involve linking environmental data with genetic markers to better predict and intervene during high-risk periods.
