The Widemouth 2 Fire has grown significantly and is currently reported at 36,438 acres with 0% containment, officials stated on August 3, 2026. While the fire has grown, there was no overnight infrared flight to provide updated acreage, meaning the actual size may be much larger than current maps indicate.
The fire, which was caused by lightning on July 27, 2026, is located within the Fillmore Ranger District, six miles south of Kanosh. Firefighters have reported extreme fire behavior due to hot, dry, and windy conditions. Despite these challenges, no structures have been lost and no major injuries have been reported.
Firefighters are currently working on the perimeter near Kanosh and making progress near Meadow. In Dry Wash, crews and dozers are working to strengthen lines to prevent the fire from pushing southeast. While the fire has crested over Chalk Creek and continues to push east, officials noted it is not moving as quickly as the previous northward push.
Currently, Interstate 70 and surrounding communities are not impacted. Interstate 15 is also not impacted, though drivers are asked to be cautious of smoke and traffic in the area.
A community meeting for those affected by the fire will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Millard High School Auditorium. The meeting may be canceled if evacuation levels in Fillmore increase. Officials may attempt to live stream the meeting via the Fishlake Facebook page.
Residents are advised to follow the Millard County Sheriff page for current evacuation levels. If residents are placed under a GO order, they will be notified via phone alerts and door-to-door knocks.
The Widemouth 2 Fire is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service within the Fishlake National Forest. A forest closure is currently in place.
