The match was significantly impacted by early misconduct, as rookie defender Dylan Kropp received a straight red card in the fifth minute for a tackle from behind inside the defensive box. Real Monarchs goalkeeper Trace Alphin initially kept the match level with a save on a resulting free kick, but Houston Dynamo 2 took the lead in the 16th minute when Reese Miller scored from a cross. Three minutes later, Mattheo Dimareli doubled the Houston advantage with a long-range left-footed shot.
