BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw four interceptions in a 28-20 loss to Utah on Saturday, Nov. 7, as the Cougars' College Football Playoff hopes took a hit, according to a report published November 7.
The loss occurred during a game where BYU trailed 28-20 in the fourth quarter. With 4:39 remaining in the period, Bachmeier attempted a pass to an open receiver in the end zone on third-and-goal from the 2-yard line, but the pass was intercepted by Trey Reynolds. This turnover helped seal the victory for the No. 4 Utes.
Bachmeier completed 21 of 35 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 59 yards on eight carries. His four interceptions in the game doubled his previous season total of four. While Utah lost two fumbles, they won the turnover battle 4-2 against the Cougars.
BYU's offense struggled in the second half, failing to score as five drives resulted in two punts and three interceptions. The Cougars' running game was also limited, with running backs LJ Martin and Sione Moa combining for 56 rushing yards on 17 carries.
The defeat marks BYU's second loss of the year, both of which occurred during conference play. While the Cougars hold a signature win against Notre Dame, the loss places them in a difficult position regarding a potential Big 12 title game berth or a College Football Playoff spot.
