The Philadelphia Flyers secured a 6-3 victory over the Utah Mammoth at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday afternoon. The win follows a three-game winless streak for the Flyers and was marked by the return of Travis Konecny from the injured reserve.
Travis Konecny, returning from a lengthy stay on the injured reserve, scored 1:06 into the second period to break a 1-1 tie. The goal occurred when a Konecny pass hit goaltender Karel Vejmelka’s pad and slid into the net, giving Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Konecny also provided an assist on the team's fourth goal.
Following Konecny's goal, Noah Cates scored at 5:50 with assists from Travis Sanheim and Jamie Drysdale. This marked only the sixth time in 16 games that the Flyers scored first. Matvei Michkov scored his 10th goal of the season at 12:49. Michkov has recorded nine goals in October, becoming the second Flyer in the last 20 years to achieve that monthly total, following Sean Couturier.
Utah responded with a goal from Dmitri Simashev at 14:24. In the third period, Christian Dvorak scored at 1:02 following a feed from Konecny. Oliver Bonk added a goal at 5:35 to extend the lead to 5-1. Utah scored two late power-play goals, and Cole Knuble scored an empty-net goal to finish the game.
The Flyers' roster saw changes following the return of Konecny and Owen Tippett from injury. Rookie defenseman Hunter McDonald was returned to Lehigh Valley on Saturday after five games with the Flyers.
Coach Rick Tocchet noted that Konecny brings puck possession and steadiness to the lineup. The defensive unit saw a reset with Simon Benoit returning to the lineup to pair with Nick Seeler, while Drysdale paired with Sanheim and Cam York played with Bonk.
The Flyers are scheduled to host the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.
