The United States sanctioned five Mexico-based leaders of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) on June 18, 2025. The cartel is described as a violent organization responsible for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and other illicit drugs into the United States.
The sanctions include the designation of CJNG leader Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, and Audias Flores Silva. Flores Silva reportedly controls clandestine laboratories used to produce methamphetamine and other illegal drugs for trafficking to the United States.
The Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is offering rewards through its Narcotics Rewards Program. A reward of up to $15 million is available for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Oseguera, while a reward of up to $5 million is offered for information regarding Flores.
The United States also designated a CJNG commander identified as the primary suspect in the recent murder of a Mexican influencer during a social media live stream.
This action followed the designation of the CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The United States stated its commitment to disrupting the trafficking of fentanyl, which is a leading cause of death among people aged 18 to 49 in the United States, along with associated violence. The designations were taken pursuant to Executive Order 14059 and 13224, as amended.
The sanctions were announced by Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
