The Utah Department of Transportation began the first phase of a multi-year improvement project in Parleys Canyon that included nightly lane closures along I-80. Starting Monday, May 11, drivers faced lane closures between 2300 East and Exit 130 each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The construction work was part of several projects along I-80 intended to repave 22 miles of the roadway, improve eight bridges, install 11 miles of fiber optic cable, and upgrade nearly 50 miles of culverts.
UDOT Region Two Director Robert Stewart stated that I-80 served as a critical route for Utah's economy by connecting communities in Salt Lake and Park City and supporting commutes, deliveries, and tourism. He noted that these projects were intended to keep the road in good condition for daily drivers.
A subsequent phase of work was expected to begin later that summer, involving paving from Mountain Dell Reservoir to Lambs Canyon, while bridge work and other activities were anticipated for 2027.
In addition to the construction, drivers faced temporary delays near Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, May 9, due to the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. During that period, 500 South between Guardsman Way and 1300 East was scheduled for closure from May 7 through May 10.
