The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Utah Mammoth 6-2 at Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Oct. 17, according to a report published Oct. 14. Connor McDavid tallied two goals and three assists during the game, extending his season-opening point streak to eight games.
McDavid currently leads the NHL with 23 points through eight games, consisting of six goals and 17 assists. By reaching this total, he tied Mario Lemieux (1995-96) and Wayne Gretzky (1986-87) for the most assists through a player's first eight games of a season in NHL history. He is also the second fastest player to reach 20 points, following Lemieux's 1995-96 pace.
The Oilers' victory saw goals from Zach Hyman, Mathieu Joseph, Kasperi Kapanen, and Leon Draisaitl. Hyman, returning from an undisclosed injury that caused him to miss six games, scored his first goal of the season on a power play. Draisaitl extended his goal streak to three games, while Evan Bouchard extended his point streak to five games. Tristan Jarry made 26 saves in the win, which moved the Oilers to a 5-0-0 road winning streak.
The Mammoth, who entered the game on a three-game win streak, saw goals from John Marino and Mikhail Sergachev. Mammoth coach Andre Tourigny noted that his team struggled with physicality and winning battles. The loss follows a 4-2 regulation loss for the Oilers against Utah on Thursday.
Following this victory, the Oilers will return to Edmonton for a five-game home stand.
