Fremont secured both team championships during the Region 5 cross country championship races held Friday at the Weber County Fairgrounds, according to a October 3 report. While Northridge High runners achieved dominant individual wins, Fremont managed to sweep the team titles in both the girls and boys divisions.
In the girls 5K race, Northridge junior Evelyn Cook won by 25 seconds, finishing with a time of 19:26.75. Box Elder's Brynlee Cragun finished second with a time of 19:51.83. The girls' team race was decided by a single point, as Fremont finished with 48 points to Northridge's 49. Fremont's victory was aided by an 11th-place finish from sophomore Harriet Poulson, who clocked 21:32.27. Northridge's top finishers included Abbi Frost in third, Jane Jeffrey in tenth, and freshman Emery Hancey of Fremont in seventh.
In the boys 5K race, Northridge senior Jeff Hazard won with a time of 15:26.37, finishing 29 seconds ahead of West Field's Daxton Coombs, who placed second with a time of 15:55.92. Unlike the narrow girls' team margin, the boys' team race saw Fremont finish with 29 points, creating a 54-point gap over second-place West Field, which finished with 83 points. Fremont placed six runners in the top 10 during the boys' race, including Duncan Judkins in third.
The girls' team standings for the event included Fremont in first place, Northridge in second, Box Elder in third, West Field in fourth, Clearfield in fifth, and Roy in sixth. The boys' team standings saw Fremont in first, West Field in second, Northridge in third, Clearfield in fourth, Box Elder in fifth, Roy in sixth, and Bonneville in seventh.
