Miami has ascended to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll, marking the second consecutive week of changes at the top of the rankings. The undefeated Hurricanes received 40 first-place votes in a report published October 18, following a weekend characterized by significant upsets.
The rankings saw a major shakeup after five of the eight top-ranked teams lost on the same day, an occurrence the source notes as the first time in AP poll history. The Miami Hurricanes, ranked No. 1 for the first time since 2002, jumped over last week's No. 1 Georgia. The Hurricanes are currently 6-0.
BYU jumped to No. 2 following a win over Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish dropped to No. 4 after the game, which was marked by controversy regarding a late clock stoppage. The Big 12 conference saw significant movement, with BYU and Texas Tech—who rose to No. 8 after a win over Arizona State—contributing to the conference having three teams in the top 10.
The SEC saw a decline in its top-tier presence, moving from four teams in the top 10 to two. Ole Miss was the only top-10 team from the previous week to remain undefeated. Other notable shifts include UCLA reaching No. 9 and Utah reaching No. 10. Kentucky is currently ranked No. 12 after a 6-1 start in the SEC, while Alabama has fallen to No. 13.
The current top 10 includes Miami, BYU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Indiana, Ole Mass, Texas Tech, UCLA, and Utah. The Big Ten also maintains three teams in the top 10, consisting of Ohio State, Indiana, and UCLA.
