The third annual Carbon Shortcuts Project has opened registration for its 2026 filmmaking competition, inviting Utah-based creatives to produce short films centered on the theme of 'Future Visions.' Organizers from Filmulate announced July 2, 2026, that the project aims to provide more opportunities for local filmmakers to showcase their work on a large screen. The contest is designed to be inclusive of all technical backgrounds, specifically welcoming individuals who have never previously recorded footage or those who primarily use mobile phones to create content.

According to the Helper Arts Festival, this year's theme, 'Future Visions — Through Your Lens,' encourages participants to utilize elements of the past and present to construct visions of what is to come. The competition is officially sponsored by the Utah Film Commission.
Required genres for competition
To qualify for judging, participants must select one of 11 specific genres to guide their storytelling. These genres include Utopia, Dystopia, Cyber Punk, Kitschy Futurism, Tech Fear, Hacker, Robots, Cerebral SciFi, Space Opera, AI Is Good, and AI Is Good, and AI Is Bad.
Mandatory narrative elements
Beyond selecting a genre, every submission is required to feature a specific narrative element: a life-enhancing or life-deterring invention. This technological component serves as the defining characteristic of the filmmaker's envisioned future.
Technical rules and runtimes
The competition maintains strict technical requirements for all entries. Films must have a total runtime of under 10 minutes, and this limit includes a maximum of 60 seconds allocated for credits. Filmulate noted that while the time limit is strict, filmmakers may earn bonus points if they hit the 10-minute mark exactly.
Bonus point opportunities
Additionally, participants can earn extra bonus points by incorporating a Utah historical fact into their film, with further rewards available if that fact is related to the film's content.
The submission process requires digital uploads by a deadline of 11:59 p.m. on August 10, 2026. Filmmakers must email a non-password-protected file-sharing link to info@filmulate.com. The organizers emphasized that entries must include both a signed waiver and proper title cards; failure to include these specific documents will result in the film being disqualified from judging.
Registration for the project officially opened on June 1, 2026, with a registration fee of $50.00 per team.
The culmination of the project will take place at 2:00 p.m. on August 22, 2026, during the Helper Arts Festival. The screening will be held at the Rio Theater, located at 210 S. Main Street in historic Helper, Utah.
