Established in January 2016, the Center for National Security Studies (CNSS) serves as a premier national security program utilizing a multi-disciplinary academic approach. The center examines both theoretical and practical aspects of national security policy and practice, focusing on areas such as intelligence, emerging technology, cybersecurity, and homeland security.
Academic Pathways and Degree Options
The CNSS offers a variety of academic pathways, including Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in National Security Studies, which require 125 credits to graduate. A minor in the field is also available, requiring 24 credits. For students seeking specialized skills for direct employment, the center provides several short certificates and diplomas that can stack into an associate degree.

The center is a co-leading institution of the Intermountain Intelligence, Industry, and Security Consortium (I3SC), alongside Utah State University’s Center for Anticipatory Intelligence (CAI). This collaboration provides students with research opportunities, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary coursework to address complex global challenges.

According to 2023 alumni data, the center reports significant professional success for its graduates. Within six months of graduation, over 48% of alumni reported receiving job offers from federal and state agencies, while over 29% received offers from private-sector companies. Additionally, more than 90% of graduates are working in full-time employment or attending graduate programs within six months of completing their studies.
