SUU Launches Online Graduate Accounting Certificates to Meet Workforce Demands

CEDAR CITY, UT - In response to the need for specialized skills among accounting professionals, Southern Utah University (SUU) is expanding its business offerings by launching two new online certificates: the Taxation Graduate Certificate and the Professional Accounting Graduate Certificate. These programs were intentionally designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.
"Our goal is to equip students with immediate, practical skills without having to pause their careers to acquire them," said Steven Hawkins, director of SUU's Master of Accountancy program. "Whether preparing for the CPA exam or expanding into advisory roles, these certificates develop the critical thinking and sound judgment needed to excel in the field of accounting."
The Taxation Graduate Certificate focuses heavily on corporate tax, pass-through entities, and IRS procedure. Equipping students to skillfully navigate compliance, planning, and tax controversy. This program is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in public accounting, corporate tax departments, tax consulting, or federal roles with the IRS, such as Revenue Agent or Tax Specialist, by providing graduate-level coursework that helps satisfy federal qualification standards.
The Professional Accounting Graduate Certificate blends advanced auditing, financial reporting, and tax seminars with high-demand electives like data analytics, business law, and accounting ethics. It is tailored for professionals seeking to advance or transition into high-growth roles in public accounting, auditing, corporate accounting, and financial management, as well as those completing academic requirements for professional credentials.
Both programs feature small, asynchronous online classes taught by experienced faculty, allowing working professionals and CPA candidates to efficiently earn their certifications. Additionally, all earned certificate credits can be applied directly toward SUU's full Master of Accountancy degree.
SUU's popular online Master of Accountancy program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the gold standard for accounting education in colleges and universities, and boasts a 98% job placement rate. The next semester begins Jan. 6, 2026
