The Iron Fire burning near Eureka grew to 37,172 acres after making a run east through the Pinyon Canyon area, according to Utah fire officials. As of June 24, 2026, firefighters reached 17% containment on the blaze.
Utah Fire Info stated in a media release that firefighters successfully stopped the fire run and continued extinguishment efforts with an emphasis on the eastern flank. Crews also worked to improve protection for structures in and around Eureka.
Despite progress, officials noted that crews were preparing for severe weather, including dry lightning and a windstorm that could increase fire activity. Utah Fire Info stated that such storms often produce high outflow winds that can lead to aggressive growth and challenge containment features. Rain was anticipated to enter the fire area by the end of the day on June 24.
Mandatory evacuation orders remained in place for Eureka, Chimney Rock Pass, and surrounding areas. Additionally, emergency crews closed Highway 6 between Elberta and Eureka, requesting that the public avoid closed areas.
Residents affected by evacuations could find assistance at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse located at 15456 South 12800 West Street in Elberta.
Utah Fire Info advised that neighboring communities might experience smoke from the fire and recommended that children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions stay indoors if possible.
