BYU football has bolstered its defensive roster by adding linebacker Jake Clifton, a transfer from Big 12 program Kansas State, according to official university athletic department information released July 26, 2026.
Kansas State Experience
Clifton, a native of Owasso, Oklahoma, joins the Cougars as part of the 2026 transfer class. The linebacker brings significant experience from his tenure in the Big 12, having played in 19 games over two seasons at Kansas State between 2022 and 2023.
During his time with the Wildcats, Clifton appeared in eight games during the 2023 season. In those contests, he earned three starts and recorded 24 total tackles along with two tackles for loss. His collegiate career also included a productive freshman campaign where he accumulated 12 tackles across 11 games.
Transition to BYU
The addition of Clifton follows a period of time away from football for the linebacker. Before transferring to BYU, Clifton served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nicaragua.
BYU football first announced his arrival via social media on Jan. 13, 2026, welcoming him to the program.
High School Background
Clifton's defensive pedigree traces back to his high school career at Owasso High School in Oklahoma. As a sophomore in 2019, he helped lead the Owasso program to a state championship.
His individual accolades include being named the 2021 District 6A1-2 co-Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to his football commitments, Clifton was a multi-sport athlete during his high school years, competing in both basketball and track.
