Firefighters have increased containment of the Black Canyon Fire to 26% following recent cooler and wetter weather, according to an August 14, 2026, update from the U.S. Forest Service.
The fire, which began on July 30, 2026, due to lightning, has grown to cover 3,549 acres.
Wildland fire crews recently established a handline along the northeastern portion of the fire. To protect the Reeder Subdivision, a handline was also completed along the southern portion of Reeder Ridge, connecting to a previously completed dozer line.
Ongoing efforts involve strengthening, reinforcing, and completing dozer lines on the western perimeter. Crews are also working to strengthen contingency lines along Skyline Road and increasing protection around logging decks in the Black Canyon area. Aviation support includes helicopters and three CL-415 scooper aircraft providing water drops.
The Emery County Sheriff’s Office has maintained a GO evacuation order for the Reeder Subdivision. Residents are advised to follow all evacuation instructions and monitor official sources for updates.
Road closures in the Manti-La Sal National Forest remain in effect. FS Road 0014 (Millers Flat) is open from its junction with FS Road 0040 (Cottonwood) north to Highway 31, but remains closed south of that junction. Additionally, Forest Order #04-10-26-02-03 has closed portions of the Ferron Ranger District, including Spring City Canyon Road (FS Road 0036) and FS Road 0014 (Millers Flat).
A temporary flight restriction is in place over the fire area. Officials noted that recreational drones entering the restricted area can force aircraft to shut down wildfire air operations.
