FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 1, 2026SLCPD Activates Officer-Involved Critical Incident ProtocolSALT LAKE CITY — Yesterday the Salt Lake City Police Department initiated the officer-involved critical incident (OICI) protocol.
At 8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, Salt Lake City police officers responded to a violent psychiatric problem at 575 East 400 South.
The caller informed SLC911 a man hit their car and was now screaming in the street. The caller also believed the man may be drunk.
At 8:33 p.m. officers found a man near the drive through of a business. Officers gave the man several commands to sit down and the man refused.
As the man tried to leave, he encountered other officers, stopped and brandished a knife towards officers.
Officers continued to give commands to drop the knife, but the man refused.
An officer deployed a Taser, firing 4 probes which were ineffective.
The man ran east towards 600 East. A police officer in a vehicle tried to stop the man but he ran around the car into the parking lot on the east side of 600 East.
The man continued to brandish the knife, two officers fired their weapon striking the man.
The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative as is standard practice.
No officers or other individuals were injured.
We are aware of reports that a non-involved vehicle was struck during the incident. As a department we will account for every round, and we are cooperating with the protocol team to determine exactly what happened.
In the meantime, we have reached out to the individuals involved to provide resources available to them through the city. We are committed to making sure they are taken care of.
Protocol Team 2, led by the Unified Police Department, is conducting an independent investigation.
