The Kanab Elementary Community Council met on October 13 to review various school plans and safety initiatives for the 2026–27 school year. During the meeting, members discussed updates to technology policies, student intervention programs, and upcoming community events.
Cherie Sheffler provided information regarding NetSafeUtah and the Responsible Use Policy. NetSafeUtah is designed for grades K–3 to cover internet safety and when to notify an adult. The Responsible Use Policy is intended for older students and covers topics such as appropriate technology use, online safety, plagiarism, protecting personal information, gaming and chatroom safety, and avoiding conversations with people online. Additionally, Typing.com was introduced as a new typing program featuring grade-level videos.
The council reviewed the 2026–27 Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Plan, which aims to support a positive school environment through a three-tier system. The plan includes White Ribbon Week and reward systems, such as the recently purchased cowboy hats. Regarding the Teacher and Student Success Act (TSSA) Plan, the school met all school improvement goals this year. Nine students are currently in the University of Utah intervention program, and funding will cover up to nine students in the University of Utah online reading intervention for grades 4–6. All funds have been accounted for and spent.
The 2026–27 School LAND Trust (STL) Plan includes a goal to increase proficiency by 1% each year. The plan provides stipends for summer school and before- or after-school interventions, and $5,000 is allocated for character and reading education. The council discussed whether to use these funds for White Ribbon Week, which focuses on internet safety. While the official date for White Ribbon Week is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the council discussed March 22–26 as a preferred week. Materials for the event cost approximately $1,000 and include take-home items for students and parents.
Upcoming school events include Red Ribbon Week from October 26–30, a Halloween Parade on October 30 at 8:30 AM, and STEM Night on November 5 from 6:00–8:00 PM. Other scheduled events include an appearance by author Brandon Mull on December 3, the KES Choir Concert on December 7 at 6:00 PM, and Literacy Night on December 10 at 7:00 PM. The council proposed a trial meeting for November 18 at 2:00 PM in Mr. Trimble's office to discuss moving future meetings to school hours.
