Granite has been awarded a $111 million contract by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for a major infrastructure project in Salt Lake City. The project, funded by UDOT and Federal sources, involves the rehabilitation of I-215 and multiple ramps for SR-201, Interstate 80, and California Avenue.
The project spans from milepost 19.53 to 22.8 and includes the rehabilitation of 3 miles of I-215 and 12 miles of ramps. Additionally, the scope includes the rehabilitation of 22 bridges.
Key elements of the work include rubblizing existing Portland Cement Concrete Pavement and overlaying it with 175,000 tons of highly modified hot mix asphalt. The project also involves structural deck replacements, hydro demolition, and pothole patching across 22 bridges, the installation of 22,000 linear feet of storm drain, and ramp metering installation at California Avenue.
Granite's Walker Hot Plant is expected to supply the 175,000 tons of highly modified hot mix asphalt and 5,000 tons of temporary hot mix asphalt required for the project. Construction is expected to begin August 2025 and be completed November 2026.
Jason Klaumann, Granite Vice President of Regional Operations, said the multifaceted project encompasses strategic planning, creative development, stakeholder engagement, and operational execution. He stated the project will keep paving and structure crews busy through the winter and into the fall of 2026.
