The September Chamber luncheon was held at Houston’s Trails End Restaurant, where leadership from Kane County and Kanab City discussed topics of interest to the local business community, according to an October 18 statement from the Kanab Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber board member Nicholas Meyeres welcomed approximately 50 attendees and announced new and renewing Chamber members. Kane County Commissioner Gwen Brown provided updates on building projects that have been in the development stage for years, noting that building in unincorporated areas requires significant time, meetings, and infrastructure creation.
Commissioner Brown highlighted projects in the East Zion area, including the Discovery Center/Visitor Center at the east entrance of Zion National Park, as well as Zion Spirit and Hidden Canyon, which are intended to include cabins and glamping sites. Other mentioned projects include Camp Kaia in Johnson Canyon, along with various developments in Alton and Cedar Mountain.
County land use administrator Shannon McBride told the audience that while the county saw significant activity in the years following the COVID pandemic, most building projects have since slowed down.
Kanab City manager Kyler Ludwig discussed recent developments, including the openings of a new Ace Hardware and the Fairfield by Marriott hotel. Future business additions mentioned include a Dollar Store on the south end of town and a tap room/craft brewery in the center of town. Additionally, Ludwig noted that Ventana resort has applied for new permits and work continues at Catori Canyon.
To conclude the program, Commissioner Celeste Meyeres discussed developments regarding the North Rim, the rockslide in Zion, and work on the Sand Dunes road.
