Midvalley Elementary has been named among the top elementary schools in Utah according to the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings, as part of a broader wave of recognition for Canyons School District schools announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
District Schools Earn High Rankings
The Midvalley Elementary rankings come as Canyons School District reports significant presence in the state's top-performing schools. According to Canyons School District, 28 elementary and middle schools in the district topped the charts in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings. This includes Sunrise Elementary, which retained its No. 1 position on the list of Best Elementary Schools in Utah, and Peruvian Park, which ranked at No. 4. Additionally, 20 other elementary schools in the district were listed within Utah's top 40 percent.
Middle School Success
The recognition extends to middle schools within the district as well. Canyons School District reported that six middle schools were recognized in the rankings. Among these were three schools that scored within the top five: Albion at No. 3, Butler at No. 4, and Draper Park at No. 5. The district's success follows previous recognition where U.S. News identified four of the district's traditional high schools with "Best in Utah" status.
Ranking Methodology
The U.S. News & World Report methodology for these K-8 rankings focuses on state test scores, specifically the percentage of students who are proficient or above proficient in math and reading. The scoring system uses a weighted approach: half of each school's score is based on test scores at face value, while the other half weights those scores according to the school's socioeconomic demographics.
Scoring Factors
The report utilizes six specific factors to determine school ratings. These include College Readiness, which accounts for 30 percent of the score, and State Assessment Proficiency, which accounts for 20 percent. The remaining factors include State Assessment Proficiency (20 percent), Underserved Student Performance (10 percent), College Curriculum Breadth (10 percent), and Graduation Rate (10 percent). According to the methodology, the highest-ranked schools are those that are high-achieving and successful at educating all of their students.
Superintendent Statement
Canyons School District Superintendent Dr. McKay Robinson noted that the high number of recognized schools reflects the district's commitment to academic excellence. "Seeing so many of our schools recognized among the top-performing schools in Utah is a testament to our districtwide commitment to academic excellence and student success," Robinson said.
Commitment to Excellence
Robinson added that being honored across all grade levels demonstrates the strength of the foundation built for students from kindergarten through graduation. The Superintendent also extended thanks to the Board, educators, leaders, parents, and students for their dedication to these standards.
Scale of Recognition
The scale of the competition highlights the significance of the rankings. In Utah, there are nearly 600 elementary schools and approximately 200 middle and junior high schools. Midvalley Elementary, located at 217 East 7800 South in Midvale, has earned the right to display celebratory badges on its website following the announcement.
