The University of Utah issued a Campus Alert on Wednesday night after a report of a person brandishing a firearm.
Police later determined the weapon was an Airsoft replica rifle.
University of Utah and Salt Lake City police officers responded to the area of Lassonde Studios, a university housing center.
At 10:43 p.m. on Wednesday, an alert instructed residents to stay in their rooms. An 11:21 p.m. update stated the alert had been lifted and the area around Lassonde Studios was safe.
Officers from University Police and Salt Lake City Police located and detained the individual. No injuries were reported during the incident.
The item involved was identified as an Airsoft rifle, a lightweight toy that uses compressed air, gas, or electricity to shoot 6mm plastic BBs and is designed to closely resemble a real rifle.
