Progress Along Buena Vista Boulevard
The Spanish phrase “buena vista” translates to “good view” and is very appropriate in describing the scenic landscape visible from Buena Vista Boulevard. One can’t miss the majestic beauty of Pine Valley Mountain with the stunning Red Cliffs in the forefront. Rock formations of sandstone and lava create mesas that seem to rise up in random panoramic patterns across the valley, and Zion National Park on the far horizon constantly beckons a visit for a closer look.
While the skyline remains constant, the makeup of this frontage road bearing the name good view is changing, offering new uses and benefits to the community. Buena Vista Boulevard is now fully improved and widened to 5 lanes from Main Street to Green Spring Drive. It’s hard not to take notice of the building pad built up for the new WinCo Foods north of I-15, on the southwest corner of Buena Vista and Main. This 84,000 square feet grocery store will provide an additional and new option for residents and visitors to shop local. Two additional buildings of about 6,000 square feet each will be built on-site in conjunction with the store, offering more retail, restaurant, or services yet to be determined. A traffic signal is budgeted for installation this fiscal year at the entrance to Brio Parkway. A new 19,540 square foot OneHealth medical clinic is also taking shape there, bringing back primary medical care to the city that has been absent too long.
Next to the 14 acre Winco site is Boilers Park - A Natural Spring and Conservation Garden where many enjoy picnicking, dipping their toes (or more) in the water that stays around 70 degrees year round, or playing pickleball on one of four courts. Heading west, still on the south side of Buena Vista, is the new Buena Vista Commercial Complex with 9 recently completed building pads with roads, access, and utilities now in place and ready for vertical construction.
Continuing west, crossing to the north side, a new office building is approaching completion near the relatively new Panera Bread. This commercial space will include a Cypress Credit Union and professional offices. Further west, joining the ranks of the Springhill Suites and Residence Inn by Marriott, adjacent to Green Spring Golf course, is a Homewood Suites by Hilton currently under construction. Future retail, restaurant, or other uses will fill in around it, near the Maverick on the corner.
It’s not all about commercial development, additions to the city trail network will connect two of our most historic landmarks: The Boilers and The Cotton Factory, which is home to Star Nursery. The new trail section will run in between I-15 and Buena Vista from Main Street to Mill Creek. It will then follow the flow under the freeway, through the culvert, along the meander of the creek to Nisson Park, near where historically the Cotton Factory used the water in cotton production. I’m not sure to what extent the pioneer settlers fighting for survival had the luxury of appreciating the good view of this desert landscape, but thanks to their grit and resilience, we can certainly appreciate the good view and continued progress today. -Kress Staheli
