The Uintah School District has added more information to its website regarding a proposal to close Uintah Middle School and reconfigure the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, according to an October 23 statement. The updated UMS Closure Study webpage now includes enrollment data spanning from 2018 to 2026 and a 10-page document detailing the questions district officials are exploring.
A frequently asked questions document is being developed for the webpage and is expected to be added early next week. As part of the study, principals at Ashley, Davis, Discovery, Lapoint, Maeser, and Naples elementary schools have met or will meet with 5th-grade students to gather opinions on serving 6th graders at the elementary level next school year. Additionally, principals at Uintah Middle School and Vernal Middle School have met or will meet with 6th- and 7th-grade students to discuss a proposal to consolidate 7th and 8th grades into Vernal Middle School next school year. These student meetings utilize a protocol of neutral language to allow for free expression of opinions. The proposal is also scheduled for discussion at Community Council meetings for these eight schools in November. Eagle View Elementary will not be affected by the proposed changes because it is a K-8 school.
The Uintah School Board is scheduled to hold a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Eagle View. The meeting will include a work session at 3:30 p.m., an annual Impact Aid meeting at 5:30 p.m., and a business meeting at 6:30 p.m. During the business meeting, the board will take public comment regarding the proposed closure of UMS and school reconfiguration. The agenda will be available on the district’s public meeting portal at least 24 hours before the meeting. Online public comments regarding the proposal can be submitted through a provided form until 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2026, to allow board members time to consider the feedback before a vote on Dec. 22, 2026.
