The Sevier County Commission met on Sept. 28, 2026, to address several municipal and administrative matters, including the approval of an interlocal agreement for a bike path extension in Redmond Town. During the meeting, commissioners also approved a tax abatement for a specific parcel and authorized the filing of cross-appeals for 2026 centrally assessed properties.
The commission approved an interlocal agreement with Redmond Town to fund the development of a bike path extension. Kelly Chappell of Ensign Engineering and Redmond Mayor Lyman Anderson presented the project, which aims to extend the south boundary of Redmond through town to the city park and baseball diamond by approximately one mile. While the low bid from Silver Spur was $241,519, the total project cost, including engineering design, material testing, and a 10% contingency, is approximately $313,212.90. The motion to approve the funding was passed unanimously.
Regarding taxation, the commission voted to abate $14,921 in taxes, penalties, and interest on parcel 1-11-15. The request was made by Henry Barlow of Utah Beef Producers, who cited an error in the 2025 assessment. Assessor Hartle noted the property value was adjusted for 2026 from approximately $6 million to $4.1 million after a commercial appraiser's initial assessment was found to contain incorrect assumptions. While Commissioner Jensen expressed concern that the appeal was filed six months after the deadline, the motion to abate the amount passed with the votes of Commissioners Johnson and Brown.
The commission also adopted Resolution 2026-9-1, authorizing the filing of cross-appeals for 2026 centrally assessed properties that have appealed their taxes. Executive Director Malcolm Nash noted this includes Diamond K Gypsum and the mine. Additionally, the commission authorized a letter of support for Brion Terry to remain an active member of the Richfield City Fire Department despite his move to the Glenwood area, noting his role as the County Fire Warden.
Commissioner Brown reported ongoing work with Ensign Engineering regarding a project to replace the pavilion area at the Fairgrounds. The commission also reviewed and declared a list of personal property items as surplus and authorized for disposal.
Public hearings are scheduled for Oct. 26, 2026. The hearing for the Transportation Master Plan will begin at 1:45 p.m., followed by a hearing for Class D Road Amendments at 1:50 p.m.
