The Kaysville City Council is amending Section 33 of Title 17 of the City Code to update requirements for political signs, according to an ordinance published October 8. The changes aim to bring city regulations into compliance with amendments made by the State Legislature during the 2026 General Session.
The ordinance, identified as Ordinance 26-10-01, follows a public hearing held by the Planning Commission on September 10, 2026. During that hearing, the commission voted 0-0 to recommend approval of the amendments to the city council. The council determined that amending the code is in the best interest of residents to ensure alignment with state law.
The amendments to Section 17-33-9, which governs signs permitted by zone, include specific regulations for political signs. These signs are permitted to have a maximum size of 32 square feet, with a height limit of 4 feet. They may be displayed on private property and must be attached to a main structure. The ordinance specifies that political signs may only be displayed from one hour before to one hour after the time a real estate event is open for inspection, for a maximum of five continuous hours. Furthermore, no more than four signs are allowed per open house, and no more than one sign is permitted on a single parcel of property.
The ordinance also includes a repealer clause, stating that any previously adopted provisions of the City's Code that are inconsistent with the new amendments are hereby repealed. The amendments specifically target the regulation of signage permitted by various zones to maintain consistency with state-level political signage statutes.
