Wasatch County has released an update regarding Maverick Rock's operations plan for mitigation involving a mining expansion into Daniels Canyon. The county is currently seeking responses from community members and experts to assist in its evaluation of the proposal.
Expertise and submission details
The county is urging individuals with expertise in water, transportation, and mining to review the submitted plan. Feedback relating to health, safety, and welfare can be submitted via email to publiccomment@wasatchcounty.gov by June 10 to ensure it is included in the county's response.
Environmental impact concerns
In addition to general public feedback, Wasatch County is looking for professional opinions regarding potential impacts on the environment and community, specifically concerning air, water, and transportation. A public hearing is planned for early July.
Mining rights expansion details
The expansion involves Maverick Rock utilizing existing vested mining rights to extend operations into Daniels Canyon. Under current state law, companies can expand these rights into new land with only notice and a public hearing, bypassing the conditional-use process required for new mines.
Previous hearings and mitigation
Following a court order, the county held a public hearing on April 22 where council members expressed concerns regarding erosion, traffic, and air and water quality. Maverick Rock was subsequently given 30 days from its May 13 submission to present a mitigation plan.
Contacting state officials
Wasatch County is also requesting that residents contact state legislators and the Governor's Office to review the implications and intent of the existing statute.
