Stage 1 fire restrictions are now in effect for all National Forest System lands within the Fishlake National Forest. The order, which began at 12:01 a.m. on June 12, 2026, will remain in place until October 31, 2026, or until it is rescinded.
Purpose of fire restrictions
The United States Forest Service stated that the purpose of this order is to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during periods of high fire danger and severe fire weather conditions.
Prohibited activities and fire use
Under the new restrictions, several activities are prohibited within the described area. The order prohibits igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using fires, campfires, or stove fires, including those fueled by charcoal or briquettes.
Allowed exceptions for fire use
Exceptions to the fire prohibition include use in permanent metal or concrete fire pits or grates maintained by the Forest Service at developed recreation sites. Additionally, liquid or gas-fueled devices may be used if they can be turned on and off and are located in an area cleared of all flammable materials within 10 feet. Fully enclosed metal stoves with a chimney of at least five feet and a mesh screen spark arrestor may also be used under similar clearing requirements.
Smoking and welding regulations
Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle or building, at a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least 10 feet in diameter that has been cleared of flammable materials. The order also prohibits welding, grinding, or operating torches with open flames unless the operator has a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher with a minimum 8 oz. capacity and a Class 2A rating, and is working in a cleared area of at least 10 feet in diameter.
General National Forest prohibitions
Certain prohibitions apply to National Forest Land regardless of this specific order. These include the use of fireworks or pyrotechnic devices, blasting or the use of explosives, and the firing of tracer bullets or incendiary ammunition. Furthermore, any internal or external combustion engine must be operated with a properly installed and maintained spark arresting device.
Permitted exemptions for specific individuals
Exemptions from these restrictions apply to individuals holding Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 and to federal, state, or local officers or members of organized rescue or firefighting services performing official duties.
Violations of these prohibitions are punishable as a Class B misdemeanor. Individuals may face fines of up to $5,000, while organizations may face fines up to $10,000, or imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
