The Houston Cougars climbed to No. 14 in the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll following a 35-32 victory over Oklahoma State, according to a report published October 18. In contrast, the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns dropped 12 spots to No. 19 after suffering their second consecutive loss, a 27-24 defeat against unranked Florida.
The Longhorns, who hold a 4-2 record, will host No. 7 Ole Miss next Saturday. Florida, which re-entered the rankings at No. 20, was one of eight SEC teams featured in the poll. Texas is currently the third-highest ranked team with two losses, trailing only Alabama and LSU.
Miami became the new No. 1 team after defeating Florida State 43-35 in a double-overtime game. This shift occurred after five of the seven teams in the previous week's Top 10 were upset, a first for the poll since 1936. The upsets included No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama, and Texas.
The Big 12 saw significant movement in the rankings, with three teams appearing in the Top 10, including No. 8 Texas Tech. BYU moved to the No. 2 spot after defeating Notre Dame, which fell to No. 4. Other notable rankings include No. 10 Utah and No. 11 Tennessee.
Houston, currently 6-1, is scheduled to travel to face No. 10 Utah next Saturday.
