Antelope Island State Park hosted a grand opening for its newly expanded visitor center on October 2, 2026. The expansion is intended to provide a larger and improved experience for the public and the thousands of school children that visit the park annually.
The project has grown the original 5,000-square-foot facility, which was built in the early 1990s, to just over 33,000 square feet. Park Manager Doranne Pittz stated that while the project has been underway for approximately a decade, the actual construction phase lasted about a year and a half.
New features include the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Theater, a 200-seat venue that will show the 45-minute documentary film Secrets of the Great Salt Lake. Other additions include a larger gift shop, conference and classroom space, a learning lounge for park programming, and an event space available for public rental.
The expanded center features several interactive exhibits designed to educate guests about the island. These include a model of the island that allows visitors to highlight trails, campsites, and bison congregation areas. Other exhibits focus on local Native American culture, various animals native to the island, and a tank containing brine shrimp and a sample of water from the Great Salt Lake.
Antelope Island Theater Manager Todd Tanner said the new facility provides a strong starting point for visitors with limited time. He noted that the building's design exceeds expectations and, in his view, rivals the quality of visitor centers found at national parks.
The expansion addresses the need for space to host larger groups, such as school groups that previously could not be accommodated in the old facility. Park Manager Doranne Pittz noted that the new architecture is designed to blend in with the island landscape rather than standing out.
The Antelope Island State Park Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information is available at https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/antelope-island/.
