Individuals at the Camp Last Hope site in Salt Lake City have begun dispersing from the area ahead of a planned inspection by the Salt Lake County Health Department. The movement follows growing concerns regarding environmental and community health standards within the encampment.
City Outreach Efforts
The Salt Lake County Health Department, which maintains a mission to protect community and environmental health, has been tasked with addressing social and environmental factors impacting the area. The department's work includes preventing illness and disease through direct intervention and community collaboration.
As the encampment disperses, local municipal teams are maintaining their presence in the community. The Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office operates a Community Outreach Team led by Director Weston Clark and Deputy Director Katie Riser to engage with residents across various city districts.
Housing Stability Resources
The Salt Lake City Housing Stability Division continues to manage resources aimed at low-income and at-risk populations. The division's Homeless Engagement & Response Team, known as the HEART team, is responsible for planning the city's responses to homelessness needs, including the operation of homeless resource centers.
Under the leadership of Acting Director Heather Royall, the division also manages the Community Development Team, which administers federal HUD funds to address basic needs, emergency aid, and human services within the community.
Legal and Resource Access
Legal and social support remains available through the Salt Lake City Justice Court’s Homeless Outreach Court. This program aims to help individuals living in supportive housing or community places resolve legal issues and access justice.
Scheduled events for July include a Resource Fair at Library Square on July 17, which provides connections to healthcare, job opportunities, and legal assistance. The court also provides Spanish interpreter services on the first Friday of each month to assist non-English speaking residents.
Community Advocacy
Community advocates continue to monitor the treatment of vulnerable populations. Tyeise Bellamy, founder of the Black Lives For Humanity Movement Group, has advocated for showing respect to unsheltered family members and protecting the community from harm.
