Arizona State fell 27-20 to No. 8 BYU on Saturday in Provo, Utah, as the Sun Devils became the first team in program history to start true freshmen at both quarterback and running back. Freshman quarterback Jake Fette and running back Cardae Mack led a comeback effort that fell short in the final minutes against the Cougars.
Fette, making his first career start, rallied the Sun Devils from a 17-3 halftime deficit. He finished the game 22-of-42 for 166 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. One touchdown was a 20-yard pass to Omarion Miller, while the second was a one-yard connection to Anthony Miller, which tied the game at 17-17 late in the third quarter.
Running back Cardae Mack recorded 170 total yards, including 123 yards on the ground, marking his third 100-yard rushing game of the season. While the Sun Devils offense struggled behind a new offensive line combination in the first half, the defense held BYU to a season-low 47 rushing yards, its lowest total since 2023.
The game shifted in the fourth quarter when BYU converted a fourth-and-one on its own 14-yard line to extend a lead. The Cougars then completed a 95-yard touchdown drive with 2:09 remaining to secure the victory. Arizona State managed a 44-yard field goal with 57 seconds left, but was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick.
Defensively, Owen Long recorded his fifth double-digit tackle game of the season and forced a fumble. Montana Warren earned his first career interception and added a pass breakup, while Martell Hughes recorded eight tackles and a breakup.
Arizona State will host Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. MST at Mountain America Stadium.
