Former NFL All-Pro Eric Weddle predicted that Michigan would bench starting quarterback Bryce Underwood months before the change occurred. The prediction was realized when backup Tommy Carr replaced Underwood during a comeback victory against Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 17, according to a report published October 20.
Weddle made the prediction nearly five months ago in May during an appearance on the Zero 2 Sixty podcast. He told the podcast not to be surprised if the backup played because he did not believe Underwood could play quarterback. Weddle had observed Underwood during a practice in early April while visiting Ann Arbor with his son, Gaige, who was on a recruiting visit. During that practice, Weddle noted that Underwood struggled to deliver simple, rhythm-based passes and frequently bailed from the pocket during seven-on-seven drills.
The quarterback change took place at halftime during the game against Penn State. In the second half, Carr completed five of seven pass attempts for 47 yards and gained 36 yards on the ground, including a touchdown on one of his four carries. Michigan won the game 21-18. Coach Kyle Whittingham stated on Monday, Oct. 19, that the team saw good things out of Carr in the second half and has a plan going forward, though he did not reveal if Carr would be the permanent starter.
Weddle noted that his critique appeared to come at a personal cost, as the Michigan coaching staff stopped recruiting his son and cut off contact with him. Weddle, who played at Utah under Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham, said he does not regret his comments despite the outcome. He stated he is not happy that Underwood was benched but felt compelled to point out what he saw.
The matchup between Michigan and Indiana remains a point of interest for the Wolverines as they look to define their season.
