The Oklahoma football team remains in the receiving votes category for both the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 following a victory over Texas, according to a report published October 11.
The Sooners secured a 27-24 win over the then-No. 1 Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, which snapped a two-game series skid and prevented the team from falling below the .500 mark this season.
In the US LBM Coaches Poll, Oklahoma received 50 votes. The poll's top spot was held by Georgia with 60 first-place votes, followed by Notre Dame with three and Miami with one. Other teams ranked in the poll included Indiana, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, BYU, Texas Tech, Ole Man, Utah, UCLA, Missouri, Tennessee, USC, Iowa, Kentucky, Houston, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, LSU, SMU, Wake Forest, Boise State, and Oregon. Schools that dropped out of the rankings included Florida, Duke, and Pittsburgh.
The AP Top 25 poll also listed Oklahoma among those receiving votes, with the team earning 44 votes. Georgia holds the top position in the AP poll with 66 first-place votes, followed by Notre Dame with one and Miami with one. Other ranked teams include Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, Texas, BYU, Ole Man, Texas Tech, Utah, UCLA, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, USC, Houston, Wake Forest, LSU, Boise State, and SMU. In this poll, Wisconsin, Oregon, Arizona, Nebraska, James Madison, Florida, Duke, New Mexico, and Oregon State also received votes.
The victory over Texas provided what was described as Red River Rivalry redemption for coach Brent Venables and the OU football team. The game took place on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.
The Sooners, who hold a 3-2 record and a 1-1 record in the SEC, are scheduled to play Kentucky on Saturday night at Owen Field in Norman. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.
