Quarterback Devon Dampier ran for two touchdowns and safety Jackson Bennee forced a critical fumble in the fourth quarter to lead No. 10 Utah to a 21-13 victory over No. 14 Houston on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The win improved the Utes to 7-0 and 4-0 in Big 12 Conference play before a sold-out crowd of 51,864.
Dampier Drives Utah Comeback
Dampier's dual-threat performance was central to the Utes' comeback. After trailing 10-0 in the third quarter, Utah responded with a five-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 22-yard touchdown run by Dampier. Following a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Wayshawn Parker that gave Utah a 14-13 lead, Dampier added a 9-yard touchdown run with 2:09 remaining to seal the win.
Defensive Turnover Shifts Momentum
The Houston defense held Utah scoreless in the first half, but the momentum shifted late in the game. With 2:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, Jackson Bennee sacked Houston quarterback Conner Weigman to force a fumble, which was recovered by Jireh Moe at the Houston 9-yard line. This turnover set up Dampier's decisive touchdown run.
Houston Offense Stalls Late
Houston's offense struggled to maintain its lead. After a 24-yard field goal by Jonathan Dimas in the second quarter and a 2-yard touchdown run by Makhi Hughes in the third quarter, the Cougars were unable to score in the fourth quarter. Despite Weigman throwing for 282 yards, the Cougars' final threat ended with four consecutive incompletions near the Utah end zone.
Milestones and Rankings
The victory marked Utah's 100th consecutive sellout at Rice-Eccles Stadium, a streak that began in 2010. The win also secured Utah's first victory over Houston in program history. Additionally, the victory moved Utah into sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference.
Looking Ahead
Utah will travel to Cincinnati on Saturday, Oct. 31, to face the Bearcats. Houston will enter a bye week before hosting Cincinnati on Nov. 7.
Defensive Performance
Utah's defense held Houston to 368 total yards, significantly below the Cougars' season average of 481.8 yards. The Utes' defensive leaders included Trey Reynolds, who recorded nine tackles, and Cyrus Polu, who recorded a career-high seven tackles. Bennee also recorded eight tackles and his first career sack during the game.
