Skyridge football achieved a 37-27 statement victory over visiting Corner Canyon in a highly anticipated 6A Region 3 matchup, according to a September 26 report. The performance, highlighted by a dominant first-quarter defensive blitz, suggests the Region 3 title race is wide open.
The Falcon defense recorded five interceptions during the contest. Junior linebacker Jackson Horsley returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown four minutes into the game following pressure from senior defensive lineman Carter Seu. Shortly after, junior defensive back Ethan Schriever returned another interception 83 yards for a touchdown.
Skyridge offense utilized a successful surprise onside kick to gain field position, leading to a seven-yard touchdown run by sophomore Ului Faletau. Faletau finished with 19 carries for 87 yards. Junior running back Beckham Bennett added a one-yard touchdown rush in the first half, finishing with 13 carries for 109 yards, two touchdowns, and 25 receiving yards. Bennett credited the offensive line for opening holes for his runs.
In the second half, senior Sua Ripley and Carter Seu pressured the Corner Canyon backfield, limiting the Chargers to seven points in the third period. Junior kicker Evan Kopp added a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Corner Canyon's Diesel Dart scored a touchdown late in the game to narrow the margin. Skyridge's Bennett sealed the 10-point win with a 48-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining. The Falcon defense also recorded three downs stops and multiple sacks from Ripley and Afalava.
The victory snapped a multi-year drought for Skyridge against Corner Canyon dating back to the 2022 state championship game. The win marks Skyridge's sixth consecutive victory and includes a 2-0 record in region play.
Skyridge is scheduled to play the Lone Peak Knights on Friday, Oct. 2, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
