For the first time ever, BYU and Utah will face each other as Top 10 teams, according to a November 5 report by The Associated Press.
This edition of the Holy War involves significant stakes beyond bragging rights, as the matchup between No. 3 Utah and No. 7 BYU could determine the eventual Big 12 champion and influence College Football Playoff bids for December.
The No. 3 Utes enter the matchup with an 8-0 record and a 14-game winning streak, which is the longest in the nation. Utah currently sits a full game ahead of both BYU and Texas Tech in the Big 12 standings. Six of Utah's eight wins this season have been by 14 or more points.
Utah quarterback Devon Dampier is one of only nine FBS quarterbacks this season with a passing efficiency of 150 or better while also running for at least 350 yards. Utah coach Morgan Scalley noted the competitiveness of BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier, stating he would go to war with a player of that caliber.
BYU enters the game with a 7-1 record and is ranked No. 9 in the CFP. Following a double overtime loss to UCF two weeks ago, the Cougars likely require a victory to keep their Big 12 title and CFP chances alive. BYU coach Kalani Sitake stated the team is focused and preparing with a high sense of urgency.
The outcome may depend on the health of BYU running back LJ Martin, who was listed as doubtful on Wednesday due to a lower leg injury sustained against TCU a month ago. In his absence, Bachmeier has carried a heavier offensive load.
Individual performances are highlighted by Utah tight end Hunter Andrews, who recorded a career-high 112 yards and two touchdowns in a win against Cincinnati. Additionally, BYU freshman receiver Legend Glasker leads the Cougars in receptions, receiving yards, and yards per catch, ranking eighth in the Big 12 in both categories.
The two programs hold differing views on the history of their rivalry. Utah recognizes 103 games played since 1896, holding a 62-37-4 lead. BYU does not recognize games played between 1896 and 1898, when the school was known as Brigham Young Academy, and instead lists 97 games since 1922 with Utah holding a 59-34-4 series advantage.
